Electrolysis: The Hidden Reason Water Heaters Fail Early in Bremerton Homes
A $90 fitting could be the difference between a water heater that lasts and one that fails years early.
Electrolysis is a chemical reaction that happens when galvanized steel and copper pipe touch, and it's one of the most common reasons water heaters and plumbing systems fail early in older Kitsap County homes. It's also one of the least understood, because the damage happens out of sight, inside the walls or under the house, until a leak finally shows up.
Quick answer: Electrolysis occurs when galvanized steel and copper pipe are connected without a separating fitting, creating a chemical reaction that corrodes piping, solder joints, and water heater connections from the inside. It's especially common in older Kitsap County homes that had copper added during a remodel. A proper brass fitting prevents it and costs about $90 more per water heater installation.
Why Are Older Kitsap Homes Especially at Risk?
Many homes in Kitsap County were originally plumbed with galvanized steel pipe, then had copper added later during a remodel or repiping project. According to owner Corey Duke, that combination is where the trouble starts.
"Older houses have galvanized pipes, and then people put in copper," Corey says. "A big place I see this is on water heaters because we have to install expansion tanks."
When galvanized steel and copper are connected directly, or connected with the wrong fitting, they create a chemical reaction that eats away at the metal from the inside. "It is a chemical reaction," Corey says. "It literally eats away at the piping, the solder joints, and the welded joints on the water heater."
What Fitting Prevents Electrolysis?
The fix is simple in theory: use a brass fitting to separate the two metals instead of connecting them directly. In practice, it comes down to cost.
"I use brass fittings," Corey explains. "There are about six fittings needed, and they are around $20 apiece. Galvanized fittings are around $5." That's roughly a $90 difference between doing the job right and doing it cheap, spread across a single water heater installation.
"Some plumbers use the galvanized fittings to save money, and then connect them to copper supply lines," Corey says. "That creates electrolysis. It destroys the water heater and can destroy piping inside the home."
Why Does This Corner Get Cut?
It's not that plumbers don't know better. It's that galvanized fittings save money at the moment, and most homeowners have no way of knowing which fitting was used.
"Some plumbers do it to save money, and homeowners do not know any better," Corey says. "They save a few bucks. It is sad to see. My water heaters are around the same price, and I use quality parts."
That last point matters. Cutting this corner doesn't even save the homeowner money. It saves the plumber a few dollars in materials while quietly shortening the lifespan of a water heater that costs the homeowner the same either way.
What Does Electrolysis Look Like Before It Becomes a Leak?
Watch for:
- Rust or discoloration around fittings near a water heater
- Corrosion where an expansion tank connects
- A water heater that's needed element replacements more than once or twice
Any of these can point to a mixed-metal connection working against the system from day one.
